Description
These little owls, 8-10” tall, call Marco Island, Florida their home year round. Their burrows, which are dug 3 feet deep and 5 to 7 feet long, apparently are hurricane proof, having survived Irma. There are approximately 240 burrows, home for over 340 adults currently on Marco Island. The threatened species is the only owl that nests underground.
