Description
The Lockkeeper’s House, built in 1845 on the Des Moines River near Eldon, Iowa, was to be part of the proposed river locks project to accommodate steamboat traffic. But the Des Moines River Navigation Company failed and the funds were reallocated to the railroad. The masonry building, listed on the National Register of Historical Places, served as a residence over the years before being abandoned. This would make a great jigsaw puzzle and looks great on many other products. Visit Ron-Long.pixels.com.

I'm going to guess you were visiting the American Gothic house in Eldon, Frank (my wife's hometown – I know the area well). If you get that way again, and you like historical things, also check out the Iowaville Cemetery just north of Selma for photo ops. Thanks for your comments!

Ron, what a fantastic looking structure, constructed of local materials it is simple, straightforward and functional in design that has great eye appeal. This old house is a beautiful and carefully preserved example of vernacular limestone design and construction that you have wonderfully captured. Not too long ago we were only about 7 miles from this building and I had no idea that it was there, what a bummer ! ! ! Next time we are in this area I am for sure going to stop by and get a closer look at this historic house. Great find, great image Ron ! ! ! ! !
