1957 was the last year of the extremely popular two-seater Ford Thunderbird. In 1958 Ford introduced the larger four-seater "Square Birds". The original 1955 "Mini-Birds" were developed in response to the Chevrolet Corvette shown at the Motorama display at the 1953 New York City Auto Show.
